This got me thinking about how we worry and talk about those who have money, but don't give the way we think they should. How from liberals and progressives you always hear about "the rich" not giving enough. Give! Give! they cry, just like the leech who has two daughters.
Then this video came across my Instagram feed, let us watch it together:Money has always been a touchy subject in politics. You're bad if you have it or you're bad if you don't. You can only keep so much, or can't keep any of it. If you work hard, you are really working too much. If you don't work the same way someone else does, you're lazy. Both liberals and conservatives can get the idea of money in The Bible wrong. This is why reading your Bible is so important! The messages that exists out there about what The Bible says, are usually a half truth.
Progressives and Liberals will always try to say that if you have money you are bad. Conservatives will say, if you don't have money, you are lazy. But God says something else. While reading this morning I came across Ecclesiastes 5:18-20, "18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart."
This chapter is all about wealth. Describing the futility in placing our love in it, of relying on it, of trying to get it from other people. It describes having happiness as coming from God and not wealth. But also says that God gives a person wealth and possessions, such as homes. Then, he gives them the ability to enjoy it. Later on in The Bible God talks about caring for your family, especially for members of your household. Should we now tell people how to care for their families? Does this gentleman know how Dave Ramsey gives²? After all, Dave's slogan is to get out of debt so you can live and give like nobody else.³
When we think about money and the messages that surround the idea of Money, we have to always be careful to take a Biblical view on it. Consider these verses and then think about the message of the video:
- Proverbs 13:22 ESV A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous
- Proverbs 13:11 Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.
- Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
- Ecclesiastes 7:12 Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it.
- 1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
- 1 Timothy 6:9-10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
We've already seen how Progressives put the progressive ideals ahead of The Bible by not believing it is from God¹. I've seen over and over again how progressives who are rich don't liquidate the assets they have because, hey, "Nothing wrong with having nice things."⁴ They point the finger at whomever they don't like or think would be popular to disagree with and want their money. Give! Give!
When it is pointed out that millionares, billionares, etc. do give. It's never enough. Give! Give!
